The challenges of working remotely

We’ve all seen the hilarious Tik Tok videos of those struggling to work remotely from home – half-dressed, propped up in bed with their laptops while sipping wine from a coffee mug! Humour aside, remote work burnout is a huge issue currently. What’s preventing those working from home, getting dressed, washed, moving and even brushing their teeth – nothing.

Loungewear is the new hype

If you’re at home, what’s the point? Unless you’re in video meetings, there’s no reason to get dressed – loungewear is the hype. Yes, productivity might have been better initially, especially without the need to travel. But it’s taking its toll on these groups of people. By the time 2021 arrived, we all started to feel the effects of isolation and cabin fever. Motivation and drive took a nosedive.

Workplace stress is on the rise

The reality is that many workers are logging in more hours when working remote. As a result, workplace stress is on the rise. It’s no longer a perk or a luxury – it’s no longer a choice for many either. Working from home could be here to stay for the foreseeable future, but feeling trapped at home doesn’t have to.

How to combat Zoom fatigue

How can we combat Zoom fatigue, loss of productivity and serious stress levels?
Lunchtime breaks – what you do in that half hour will have an effect on your wellbeing. In fact, what you do (or don’t do) during your lunch break can easily dictate the rest of the day.

It’s a common misconception to plough straight through your lunchtime in order to get more work done, but it’s more likely your productivity will reduce as you become stressed and fatigued without a good quality break. The fact of the matter is, you need to switch off completely:

5 Ways to Reset Your Mind, Body, And Soul

1-GO FOR A WALK OUTSIDE

2-PREPARE A MEAL

3-LISTEN TO MUSIC

4-PRUNE YOUR ROSES

5-DO A 30-MIN WORKOUT

Anything form of movement/activity to get muscles and joints moving is good enough.  However,  lunchtime exercise is a good way to add activity to a sedentary lifestyle focused around sitting in front of a laptop all day.

30-Minute workout is enough!

30 minutes is enough to get you moving and focusing on something other than your work. Whether it’s Yoga or some form of high intensity workout, what you are essentially doing is shifting your focus on something else that requires concentration and energy. Aside from all the physical benefits of exercise, the endorphins released is what will elevate your mood. If you’ve had a tough morning of back to back meetings, sitting in a chair for prolonged periods, you’ll soon forget all this once you start your workout. As you continue, your thoughts will be only on the movements. Your morning’s irritations will soon be forgotten and your mind will be cleared, ready to tackle your afternoon of meetings and calls.

Employee Mental Health Should Come First

Companies are more than ever putting their employees’ mental health and wellbeing at the forefront of their business due to the covid lockdown and prolonged period of remote working.

Businesses should look into rolling out the following mental health resources for their employees to reduce employee absenteeism, create a happier workplace, increase productivity & motivation, and support workforce wellbeing.

Discounted Online Group Workouts – this is a great initiative to keep your employees connected whilst supporting a healthier workforce.

PTO & Mental Health Day – encourage your staff to take time off to regroup and re-energise so that they can be happier, focused and productive when they are working.

Offer Discounts On Fitness Gear – partner with fitness brands to encourage your employees to wear the proper fitness clothing to prevent injuries, regulate and control their body temperature, improve performance, and boost their confidence.

Lead By Example – Provide your line managers with the right tools and skill set in shaping their team members’ mental health and wellbeing.

We all play a role in preventing the onset of mental health difficulty, and it starts by taking the first step of doing something about it instead of just talking about it. It’s never about creating the perfect plan; it should just be about making a good enough plan that gets the ball rolling, which can be manageable and motivating for everyone to take part.
